6th Annual Space Shuttle Columbia Recovery

Everyone is invited to attend the 6th Annual Space Shuttle Columbia Recovery Special Event, Saturday Feb. 7 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at McMichael Middle School, 4330 SE Stallings Dr. in Nacogdoches.

The event is sponsored by the Nacogdoches Amateur Radio Club, W5NAc, to recognize and remember the effort by all the Amateur Radio Volunteers during the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in February of 2003.

The club will be operating Amateur Radio stations to communicate with other Amateur Radio Operators across the United States.

Lumberjacks defeat Sam at Cram

A spirited crowd of 4,927 cheered the Stephen F. Austin State University men’s basketball team on to victory Saturday over Sam Houston, 75-73.
The Nacogdoches County Chamber helped build the crowd for the Lumberjacks by working with the SFA Athletic Department on the second annual “Cram the Coliseum” promotion.
The promotion – which offers free tickets through Chamber members - continues Wednesday, January 14, as the Ladyjacks take on Central Arkansas at 7 p.m.
“Plenty of tickets will be available,” said Chamber Chair Donna Finley. “Every Chamber member was mailed ten tickets earlier in the month. So ask the business people you know if they are Chamber members and if they have tickets to share. Extras are also available at the Chamber and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.”
At the January 10 contest, SFA was led by Matt Kingsley, who scored 21, followed by Josh Alexander, who poured in 16 points, including four three-pointers."This is a huge momentum builder for us," said Kingsley, "It is just all that much better when it is over Sam Houston."

Finley said the community show of support for SFA was important, as many students are away on mid-year break.

Citizens 1st Bank added more incentives for the crowd with cash-win contests and spirit towels. Brookshire Brothers gave the first 3,000 fans a coupon for a free six-pack of half-liter soft drinks.

Sugarcane Event at the Durst Taylor Historic House and Gardens

Like sugar? Love history?

On Saturday, January 17, anyone who loves history, fun or sweets may join the city of Nacogdoches and the Friends of Historic Nacogdoches for the annual Sugarcane Event at the Durst Taylor Historic House and Gardens, located at 304 North St.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m., there will be live entertainment, children’s games and crafts.

Best of all there will be an actual demonstration of cane syrup-making on an open fire with a real mule powering the sugarcane mill.

In addition, ribbon cane syrup will be available to top the fresh pancakes served by the Nacogdoches Kiwanis Club.

Martin Luther King Commemorative March and Community Organization Fair

On Monday, January 19 there will be a Martin Luther King Commemorative March and Community Organization Fair. The march will be held at 10 am at the Nacogdoches County Courthouse.

New Nacogdoches guide and map here, new Web site coming soon

Anyone wanting a “good look” at Nacogdoches may get it from the 2009 Official Guide & Chamber Directory and City & County Street Map that are available at the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, 2516 North Street.

To get the new material to Nacogdoches County Chamber members as quickly as possible, Donna Finley, chamber chairwoman, is challenging board members to personally deliver as many packets as possible during the Chamber’s Operation Thank You event.

“Taking this approach to deliver the new directory and map with a hand shake and a smile fits right in with the Chamber’s ‘In Business, For Business’ theme for the 2008-09 year,” Finley said.

Operation Thank You kicks off Tuesday, Jan. 13 with a light breakfast between 7:15 and 9:15 a.m. at the Chamber. All members are invited to this come-and-go event to meet Chamber leaders and staff, network with one another and receive a heartfelt thank you.

According to Chamber President / CEO Bruce Partain, the newly-designed chamber Web site will “go live” Tuesday morning, also.

“The Web site - nacogdoches.org - shares the updated design of the hard-copy map and Newcomer Guide/Member Directory,” Partain said. “We are proud to point people to the site or supply them a map and guide. As an official provider of information about our community and its businesses, we take extra care in the quality of the data and images we distribute."

Joe Max Green / Insurance Concepts is the breakfast sponsor. The event is catered by Wolf Creek Kitchens and coffee will be provided by Hastings Hard Back Café. Floral decorations donated by Avenue Flower Shop & Greenhouse will brighten up and energize the morning event.

Chamber board members are organizing small teams to help with Operation Thank You deliveries. The teams that deliver the most packets will receive prizes from Blockbuster Video, Laine’s Hallmark Shop, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers and Starbucks. Winners will be announced at the New Member Showcase and Fourth Friday Luncheon on Jan. 23 at Hotel Fredonia.
