Blueberry thrills

The Nacogdoches square was alive with games, booths and, the most important, blueberries Saturday as the 20th annual Blueberry Festival hit the brick streets.

The festival took the simple blueberry and transformed it from just a food to games, knick-knacks and, for some in attendance, a great excuse to dye their pets blue.

Booths lined the square selling trinkets while passersby paraded between the stores and walked their dogs, goats, rats, ferrets and even fish in the pet parade.

"Blueberry Wrangler" Cowboy Max performed his Old West comedy routine for people as they waited in line for their chance at the blueberries.

One popular stop at the festival was at the east end of the square, where a line that stretched for blocks ended in the opportunity to buy blueberries.

People waited anxiously for their chance to take home a box of blueberries for future pies, cakes or maybe even pancakes.

But there was no need to wait for blueberry pancakes at the festival. The Kiwanis Club churned out pancakes just as fast as possible.
